Tommy var en av de mest framgångsrika svenska ishockeytränarna genom tiderna.                                    
Tränarkarriären  började i GGIK med juniorlaget f.d 1948-49-50 och inte oväntat blev man DM-Mästare.                                    
1968-69 blev det GGIKs A-lag för Tommy. Då hade Brynäs IF fått upp ögonen för talangen och värvade                                     
Tommy till säsongen 1969-70, rekordung ålder (23 år), tränarkarriär på elitnivå och han med sex                                      
SM-guld för Brynäs IF och ett för MoDo Hockey 1979.		 tommyggikvimp
Han förde dessutom ett Brynäs på nedgång till SM-Final 1995, där man föll i den 5:e och avgörande matchen mot HV71 i sudden death.     
Året därpå var Brynäs tvungna att kvalspela via Allsvenskan för att få vara kvar i Elitserien och Sandlin fick under uppmärksammade former stiga åt sidan.
Tommys stora framgångar och sitt enorma kunnande gav respekt i hockeysverige.
Han var en skicklig taktiker,  prövade olika idéer och filosofier, som förändrade ishockeyn    
på olika sätt. Införde även ish.taktiken 1-3-1.    
Tommy betonade kollektivets betydelse framför individuella prestationer och förmågan att svetsa samman lag.        
Han var även förbundskapten för Sveriges herrlandslag i ishockey under två perioder, och var bland annat
med när laget vann VM-guld 1987 i Wien i Österrike. För den sistnämnda prestationen tilldelades han
en kopia av Svenska Dagbladets guldmedalj 1987.		 tommy2
